The “Valley of Apes”

Kyambura Game Reserve, Queen Elizabeth Park, and Kigezi Wildlife Reserve make up the Queen Elizabeth Protected Area. Kyambura Gorge is another home of chimpanzees.

The game reserve lies north of Maramagambo Forest and south of Lake George. This lake is a Ramsar site. The wildlife reserve acts as a buffer zone. It protects animals from human activities.

Kyambura (Chambura) is a place full of unique natural wonders. It makes this part of the national park a must-see. One of the reserve’s top attractions is the Gorge. It’s well-known for several primate species, including the endangered chimpanzee.

This Gorge isn’t the only highlight in the game reserve. The saline lakes of Bagusa, Nshenyi, and Maseche are temporary homes for migrating flamingos. Lakes Kyamwiga, Kararo, Kinera, and Chibwera are freshwater lakes. Kyambura has three salt lakes and four freshwater lakes. That adds up to seven volcanic crater lakes.

Kyambura has lakes, rivers, swamps, forests, and savannas. These habitats create a great ecosystem for animals to thrive. Kyambura has changed its status many times. It was once a Controlled Hunting Area, and then became the Kyambura Game Reserve. Finally, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) renamed it the Kyambura Wildlife Reserve.

In September 2025, Uganda’s Cabinet recommended that the reserve be designated as Kyambura National Park. Kyambura is a national park to be. This wildlife reserve is waiting for approval from the Parliament of Uganda.
